The New King Meeting has been postponed to a future date.
F.A.Q (Frequently Asked Questions)
How old do I have to be to join our group?
Since we primarily perform in 21+ venues, we suggest that you be at least 21 years old to perform with our troupe.
Do I have to audition to join?
No. All we ask is that you come to our New King Meeting to find out how our group and shows run. That’s it. If you decide to join us, you can sign up for your 1st DC King Show at our general king meeting that takes place right after the new king meeting.
Do I have to have experience to join?
No. As it is helpful to have some stage experience, we accept anyone who wants to have fun with us. As you hang out with us, you will learn some tips on how to perform that will boost your confidence on stage. We are here to help you succeed. So ask questions, come to the shows and meetings and you will feel comfortable with our shows in no time.
Will I get paid to perform?
Your 1st two performances as a new troupe member will be non-paid to make sure that you are a good fit for the kings. After that, you will be paid at all of the shows that are paid gigs. Once in a while we are asked to donate our performances for fundraisers, and if that is the case, you will be notified before signing up.
Can I keep my tips?
Yes! You earned your tips so you can keep them. If we have a fundraiser for a community cause, you may want to chip in some of your pay and tip money if you can. It is up to you what you want to give. No pressure.
So what do I have to do to join the DC Kings?
All we ask is for you to come to our new king meeting and have a respectful attitude along with the willingness to be supportive to your fellow performers. That is it. We found that by respecting and supporting each other, we can really just focus on having fun as our shows are not competitions.
What happens at the New King Meeting?
At 7pm on the day of the meeting you will be given a DC King handbook by Ken Vegas (the founder of the DC Kings) and he will go through a brief history about the kings, how our shows run, what to prepare yourself for before and at the shows, and you will get introduced to the kings in attendance. Ken will try and answer any questions that you have. The New King meeting lasts for about 45 minutes and you are more than welcome to stay for the general king meeting that will take place right after the new king meeting is over at 7:45pm.
Can I bring a friend to the meeting?
Of course! Bring anyone who you will help you feel at ease.
Do you have workshops on Drag Kinging where I can learn how to become a king?
Occasionally we do have workshops. It depends on how many new kings we have and also to make sure that folks are available to attend the event. In the meantime, we offer Drag King Mentors, who are willing to help you with questions about choosing a song, picking an outfit and putting together a theme for your act. The point is to have fun, so we will help you as much as you need.
If you do have a workshop, how can I find out about it to sign up?
We ask that after you join our New King Meeting, that you sign up to our DC King Listserve so that you can stay in the loop of king workshops, events and Brolo Mustache Meet-ups.
How do I get on the listserve?
We will invite you after you attend the DC Kings meeting. We try to limit the listserve to only DC Kings. So once you join our New King meeting and decide that you want to be a king, we will send you an invite to join the DC King Listserve.
What is a Brolo Mustache Meet-up?
It is an event that we put on for kings to socialize. It can range from going out for pizza, dancing, having dinner at a fellow kings house or anything that would be fun for us to do as a group.
Is there anything that could make me a bad match for the DC Kings?
The only thing that we found that does not work with the a performer joining us is having a non-supportive attitude that creates tension within the group. We try to create and maintain a safe place for everyone to have fun together. It is pretty simple. We love team players and folks who are willing to help make our shows the best experience for all involved.
